A resignation letter records your decision to leave and the notice you are giving. Keep the wording clear: identify your role, state that you are resigning and give the intended final date. Add a brief thank-you or handover offer if appropriate.

Use the original templates below without an account. Replace every bracketed field and check your employment terms before sending. This page is the **general template collection**; our [UK resignation writing guide](/blog/how-to-write-a-resignation-letter) covers the process and notice checks.

## Simple resignation letter template

```text
[Date]
Dear [manager's name],
I am writing to resign from my position as [job title] at [organisation]. I am giving [notice period] notice, with [date] as my intended final day of employment.
Thank you for the opportunity to work with the team. During my remaining time, I will help document my current work and agree handover priorities with you.
Please confirm receipt of this letter and the final employment date.
Kind regards,
[Your name]
```

Use a full date, including the year, rather than “next Friday”. If you are unsure of the correct date, check it before treating it as settled. Do not assume a standard two-week period applies to every job or country.

## Short version

```text
Dear [manager's name],
Please accept this letter as notice of my resignation from the role of [job title]. I am giving [notice period] notice, with [date] as my intended final day of employment.
Please confirm receipt and the final date.
Kind regards,
[Your name]
```

A short letter can still be professional. You do not need to add a long explanation merely to make it look substantial. For editing an overlong draft, use the [short resignation wording guide](/blog/resignation-resign-letter).

## Appreciative version

```text
Dear [manager's name],
I am resigning from my position as [job title] at [organisation]. With [notice period] notice, my intended final day of employment is [date].
I have appreciated the opportunity to [specific, truthful experience]. Thank you for [specific support, if applicable].
I will work with you to prioritise a handover of my current responsibilities during my remaining time.
Please confirm receipt and the final employment date.
Kind regards,
[Your name]
```

Keep gratitude genuine and brief. Remove that paragraph if it does not reflect your experience. Avoid promising availability after your employment ends unless you have separately agreed it.

## Which format should I choose?

| What you need | Use |
| --- | --- |
| A neutral starting point | The simple template above |
| A concise message | The short version |
| A warm but factual departure | The appreciative version |
| An email subject and delivery checklist | [Resignation email guide](/blog/letter-for-resignation-letter) |
| Formal document layout and handover notes | [Formal resignation letter guide](/blog/letter-of-resignation-letter) |

## Before you send

Check the recipient, job title, notice wording and dates. Remove all placeholders. Read the message without relying on the attachment name to explain its purpose. Keep a record of what you sent and any acknowledgement.

For UK employment questions, consult [Acas resignation guidance](https://www.acas.org.uk/resignation/how-to-resign) and its [notice-period guidance](https://www.acas.org.uk/notice-periods/notice-when-resigning). These templates help with wording; they do not determine your contractual obligations. If the departure concerns a serious contractual dispute, seek advice before choosing wording or leaving immediately.

## What should stay out of the letter?

Keep detailed project handover information in a separate document. Avoid client records, passwords, confidential attachments and statements you cannot support. Do not turn a routine notice into an emotional account of every disagreement.

If your next application needs attention, our [CV skills examples](/blog/cv-skills-examples) can help you describe the experience you are taking forward. Keep company-confidential information out of that draft too.
